Affiliate marketing
I have decided to enter the world of affiliate marketing after studying it for several months. I didn’t want to start and jump in feet first and lose money and then be put off the idea. Instead I did the usual, downloaded a few copies of eBooks. Studied what they had to say and then study them again, listened to podcasts, took advice from the experts from various blogs and then as of Sunday 24th June I wandered into the world of affiliate marketing with my eyes wide open.
I have decided to share the experience here as a brand new marketer. This way i can learn from my mistakes, remember where I came from and let others learn a little along the way.
The start
First of all I read about 20 eBooks. I threw all but 4 away and studied these 4 inside out. The links are here and yes I get paid for each one you download, but they are honestly the best ones i have found:
Day Job Killer
Google Cash 3rd Edition
Adwords Miracles
Project X (no link)
Podcasts
There are some fantastic podcasts out there which you can learn all about the affiliate marketing world. By far the best web site you can go to is;
www.webmasterradio.fm/
This site has it all for the affiliate marketer, I love it and it has become a daily listen for me.
Forums
There is only one and that has to be www.affiliates4u.com/forums/ you will find all the help and answers you need here. I am a lurker and am having trouble getting my id from them as i have tried to join several times. That said it has taught me a lot.
The day I became a marketer
On Sunday 24th June I decided to start with an Amazon campaign. Having looked at various affiliate network sites like Clickbank, Commission Junction, and Tradedoubler I plumped for the Amazon associates option.
Basically this is when I promote specific items from the Amazon and make a commission from any sales. There is no web site involved as i am advertising using Google adwords. I suspect when i become more experienced i will used landing pages and promote items with higher commissions but to start with i am happy with Amazon’s Associate program.
Deciding on products
I used pure research for this. I looked all through the Amazon web site, looked at bestsellers in all categories, looked at popular items and not so popular but high sale items. After picking 10 items I checked them out on google and find out who else was running ads for Amazon. A lot of them were already on Google Adwords campaigns for Amazon (Google have a rule stating you cannot have 2 ads with the same display URL, I didn’t want a bidding war against any of them so decided not to go for 5 of them (I will do this when I am more experienced). I decided to go for 5 products and start promoting them with an adwords campaign.
I went in low on all the keywords for the ads. I used about 8 keywords each with about 4 negative keywords on each ad.ads and eventually put the bids up until I reached number 2-4 on Google.
The numbers
I started on Sunday night so only spent £2.97 on adverting and made 0 orders therefore £0.00
Monday was a bit different. I spent £24.07 and had 8 orders from 102 clicks. 4 have been dispatched which means I have earned £9.28, the other 4 items, if dispatched successfully should bring me another £33.

I have already disabled 1 ad. It was for a particular flat screen TV retailing at £499. I thought 7.5% of that (£37.50) would be a good little number. However I let it run for 20 clicks, spent about £7 on it and then dropped it. i have stuck with the rest and will keep them running for 100 clicks before dropping them or tweaking them.
I will continue to write this series until it dies of death or until I am sipping a a cold beer on a boat in St Kitts.
Until the next installment, tomorrow

[…] I expected to be more doing, but found a ton of new information about affiliate marketing that broke new ground for me. Among them were The Blog Consultant, The DayJobKiller, The Affiliate Classroom (which I subscribed to because, it’s both good and created by the DayJobKiller author) & the Thirty Day Challenge. […]
[…] When it comes to affiliate marketing, there are lots of resources out there, but I feel as if I may have found some of the foremost authorities on the web. The Blog Consultant has a great blog on many tips, but has a series of his own posts tracking his foray as a newbie into affiliate marketing. He is using Amazon and each day posts his progress, and what tips/tricks he tried. While that was interesting, nothing beat his post on his deep personal research on the affiliate marketing world, and the numerous resources on the web about it. You can see his entry here, and I strongly encourage any affiliate marketer to read his post and the resources he cites. One of the books he cites is The DayJobKiller. I’ll post about this book and site a bit later, but I ended up buying this book and joining his email list. […]
